18th IFFK pays homage to Rituparno Ghosh, Sukumari, Konnanatu and others

The Homage category is a tribute by the IFFK to legendary film personalities who left us in the past year. Films of Rituparno Ghosh, Sukumari and Konnanatu are part of this year’s homage section.

Rituparno Ghosh, was noted for films which were unique in their plot, style and form. The films expressed themes which others feared to capture. Ritu, the most internationally acclaimed Indian film director was a huge fan of Satyajit Ray and was a director who pioneered a change in Bengali cinema. Festival pays tribute to this ‘nothing less than legend’ director by screening Ritu’s master pieces ‘Chitrangada’, ‘Memories in March’ and his art film ‘Satyanweshi’. A favorite in Kerala, by screening his films we mourn his premature passing.

Sukumari entered the film industry as a child artist at her age of ten. She left her mark in each of roles she donned, whether that of the lead, the antagonist or the mother character. In more than six decadesof acting, she performed in over 2500 films. She has given the film industry and the film-lovers innumerable moments of ‘wow’ with her astonishing performances. ‘Mizhikal Sakshi’ and ‘Ayaal’, her recent films which received much appreciation for her performance, are to be screened in the festival to pay homage to this actor who was a figure of care, love and motherhood to many.

S. Konnanatu, the famous art director, was part of the Malayalam film industry for over four decades and handled the art department of many landmark films in the Malayalam. He is considered as a pioneer of art direction who brought changes to this much neglected area of film making. Konnanatu was the art director of India’s first 3D film, 'My Dear Kuttichathan', which will be screened in the festival as a tribute to this great film personality. 

The IFFK also pays homage to Raghavan master, the musical maestro from North Kerala and Augustine who we lost recently. It is also a time to remember Prem Nazir who passed away 25 years ago. The IFFK screens four films of this legendary actor.
